In our ever quickening age, potential exposure to trauma increases almost daily. From repetitive impact of walking on paved surfaces to mental and emotional stressors; from abusive situations to internal self-neglect, trauma in human life becomes more and more commonplace. In fact, it is part of the human experience.  While the human body’s natural reaction to trauma is a normal and healthy effort to return to homeostasis, these physiological and psychological responses can become stuck in unhelpful patterns. Massage therapists and other holistic practitioners regularly encounter survivors of a variety of traumatic events who are reacting and living from within these patterns. This workshop offers understanding to demystify trauma and tools for providing a professional response to trauma. Clarity of boundaries, scope of practice and necessity for communication are covered in detail.  Together we will learn the indicators of those living with traumatic history and work with gentleness and simplicity to create a safe space within which to work and grow.

Topics include:

  • the therapeutic components of trauma
  • the internal chemical response to trauma
  • the need for non-judgment
  • the role of the central nervous system in trauma and healing
  • signs of client conflict about receiving touch
  • signs of dissociation and abreaction
  • the professional’s response to clients with history of trauma/abuse

This is an intermediate level class for bodyworkers, teachers and touch therapists.  Participants are asked to wear comfortable, loose fitting clothing and to bring a personal item symbolizing strength and security.
